McKenzie Fine art does show a pretty steady amount of
geometric abstraction, and at times its esthetic makes me want to pull my hair out
and never go to another painting show in Bushwick. But there are people doing compelling
work in the medium, and they do seem to show up regularly in group shows at
McKenzie Fine Art. Translucent certainly fits that bill, featuring a group of
people whose eye for color makes their work move from decorative to celebratory
while showing enough diversity to make for an interesting group show.
Translucent has the ever-complex illusionary paintings of Rob deOude, whose
works seems with every new painting to be creating more and more visual motion
within his gridded paintings. Erin O’Keefe’s vibrant photographic still lifes
condense space in a way that continuously impresses. The show also includes Bushwick
luminaries like the ever-enjoyable Garry Peterson and Christopher Dunlap.
