I have written some very critical things about Yancey
Richardson especially since they moved into their current ground level location,
but if you ever needed a reminder of the gallery’s contribution to the medium, there
is Notions of Home. The show is made up almost entirely of their roster, making
it impossible to deny that on the whole the gallery has been an unmatched
beachhead for photography in Chelsea. They’ve put on so much good work even
when the medium was less than popular in Chelsea, and to that I say congrats. Without
Yancey Richardson, it is hard to say where Amy Elkins, Mitch Epstein, Anthony Hernandez,
David Hilliard, Justine Kurland, Lisa Kereszi, Laura Letinsky, Esko Mannikko,
Andrew Moore, Mark Steinmetz and Larry Sultan would be.
