David Zwirner, in a clear attempt to make me take back
everything negative I’ve ever said about the gallery, has a Pettibon show up
next to the brilliant diCorcia show. Yeah, crazy good pairing. There are
beautiful pictures of people on the edge of society in Los Angeles, and some
beautiful and cryptic watercolors of a deranged drug addict living on the edge
in LA. It’s a lot of what you’d expect from Pettibon, images visualize a very
tormented subconscious, through a prism of early 1960’s iconography of men in
suits and women with their hair up combined with cryptic text from literary
sources that are beyond my usual reading list of photography history and
professional wrestling biographies. Pettibon has noticeably increased the
amount of penis in his drawings, creating a very overt male sexuality to the
work, which leans, at least to me, more gay porn then anything else. Also there
is more color and still-lifes than I recall in past shows. Good stuff, great
pairing with diCorcia. I only wish they had mixed the two into one show. It
would have been the tits.
