I don’t understand the insistence on artifice in Simen Johan’s work. I almost like the rhino picture, but I want to believe Johan is able to make a photograph this attractive out of a large wild animal. The more you look at the work, however, especially in the context of his sculptures, it becomes clear that visually, something is afoot. Be it taxidermy animals or photoshop, we are just looking at a very realistic version of turn of the century zoological drawings paired with some uninspiring sculpture. And that is not even mentioning Amy Stein, whose pictures of taxidermied animals just crush Johan.

My favorite show...sounds like the layered meanings went right over your head...
Man that it did, and as negative as the review might sound its the closest I've ever come to liking Johan's work.
