If you’re not inclined to love 35mm street photography out of principle, you’re probably not that well versed in the work of Mark Cohen. He tends to be fond of fill-flash and pictures of places that look like Newark or Queens, pictures that at their best are still a little too formal for their own good. Lost/Found is definitely way too formal for its own good. Gone are the dingy areas of Cohen’s preferred working-class neighborhoods. Instead we get little slivers of lines and surfaces, visual play that is only interesting in the hands of a very few skilled poets like Bresson and Friedlander. Clearly Cohen is punching out of his weight class and it shows.
Through Sept. 17th
