Swagger, Drag, Fit Together at Wallspace

Wallspace (619 W 27th St. Btw. 11th & 12th Aves.)

Swagger, Drag, Fit Together

I love Wallspace from its humble beginnings as the Yale male jail to its smooth transition into a well-rounded gallery that has managed to hold on to its roots as a photography gallery. This show seamlessly highlights the best of the gallery’s vision. Swagger, Drag, Fit Togethercombines important and extremely contemporary photography with some visually impressive sculpture and video to create a show where photography and the rest of the art world co-exist without either seeming superfluous.

The show is centered around the body in the vaguest of possible ways, but in reality it is centered on the gallery’s rather high level of taste where the best of John Divola’sphotographic output from the 70’s feels just as vibrant as more recent work by Mark Wyse. Or where Judith Scott’s yarn glob seems to be making a run from the collaged dystopia of Daniel Gordon’s photographs. Or where Christopher Williams’ dry pictures re-enacting advertising as art become almost comical beside Laura Riboli’s video of modernist objects coming to life. Swag indeed.

Through Oct. 16th
