How rad is a show of photography books?
Doesn’t get much better than this for me. A room lined with tables along the
wall with photography books curated by photography types like Alec Soth and
Brad Zeller, who apparently are digging on some late 90’s traditional
photography like Andrea Modica, Chris Verene, Thomas Roma and the real
old-timey and under-appreciated Birney Imes. Or Shannon Michael Cane
representing Printed Matter, who went all sexual with almost-forgotten types
like Jeff Burton and Leigh Ledare, which speaking of Leigh Ledare, he had a
pretty daring selection of odd and challenging art books, which was hard not to
respect. The show also featured a book of Terry Richardson’s teenage snapshots
from when he was a West Coast hardcore kid. Also not surprisingly, Alec Soth
seemed to manage to have a book in everyone’s selection, with a surprisingly
large amount of Sam Falls in various selections as well. But the real standout of
the show was the selection by Self Publish, Be Happy’s Bruno Ceschel, featuring
the best thing I’ve ever seen from everyone’s favorite new photographer Lucas
Blalock, a book of random pictures a la Roe Ethridge. Great stuff, apparently
around since 2009, so I am a little out of the loop, but a heck of a book.
