I don’t know. Yeah, the first three large paintings are of a
book getting older, but there is something in the skill with which the trompe-l'œil
paintings are rendered that take the work to a place of bombast that I suspect
is not so much intentional as it is an indication that Ruscha is losing his
sense of taste. And even for Ed Ruscha, the room of whited-out text and large
ABC triptych is just boring, with no sense of the aggression towards the viewer
that was so present in his early artist books. If it weren’t for his
vandalizing of actual books like a bored teen in a public library, I would
think that Ruscha had just gotten old and way too serious for his own good.
