As popular as random abstract photographs are becoming, Grützner’s
pictures are rather good. All the images appear to be either from a wonderful
set in the artist’s studio or what I am guessing is a bohemian loft somewhere
in Eastern Europe, filled with cracking painted wood in faded colors that may
have made sense in the early 60’s. The vantage points are so convoluted that it
is often hard to locate yourself as a viewer, and it starts to make me suspect
that these may not be real places but spaces created to be photographed. Either
way, Grützner injects an air of mystery into some compelling formal images and
this keeps the formalness of the work from growing stale.
