Catherine Yass, Lighthouse @ Galerie Lelong

Well, who knew that contemporary lighthouses where on large elevated oil rig looking platforms out to sea? And who knew how rad Catherine Yass was? I’ve apparently been sleeping on her for sometime. I am not sure that I love the weird digital distortions in some of her printing. But I do love the floor-to-ceiling aerial shot of a lighthouse where the camera calmly rotates around the lighthouse eventually pointing to the water and spinning until the lighthouse is upside down. It may sound gimmicky, but like the distortion in the printing, the lighthouse is so unexpectedly modern and unromantic, it’s almost jarring in a way that, depending on your mood, justifies the inverted camera shots and printing.
