Unfortunately, the show is just what you’d expect from an exhibition of Jeff Wall photographs. I guess my expectations should have been lowered by the title. There are pictures of arcane cultural references, staged innocuous narratives and some straight landscapes. There are some nice pictures, but after his Marian Goodman show of black and white pictures in 2008 at the height the economic collapse where the work had a clear commentary on the state of things, kids playing war in an empty lot, day labors in a parking lot, dilapidated apartments and an amazing frozen over car garage, this just feels easy. It’s nice getting to see what Wall is up to, but there is no reason he can’t make an effort to put together a body of work that has a tangible theme that goes past the work that he happens to have made of late.
Through Jan 21st
Marian Goodman Gallery (24 W 57th St. Btw. 5th & 6th Aves.)
