Man, Jonathan Monk seems to really not like Ed Ruscha. Or at least sucks all the joyous humor out of Rushca’s work by airbrushing his 26 Gas Station pictures on the hoods of muscle cars. The jabbing at Ruscha with the critical detachment of Richard Prince just ends up with a petulant assault at the romanticism of the America west as well as the role the west has played in the work of Ruscha, Prince and a wide swath of American photographers. As nice as the hoods, headstones, neon signs, and modified American flags are, they come off empty, and Monk’s critique becomes more whinny than punk.
Through April 30th
